*tear* america is ranked 15th in the world as far as internet speeds. 15TH!!!!!, we invented the damn thing and we have 14 other countries already better at it then us. The basic reason is because we have these companies slowly giving us little by little more bandwidth so they can keep prices jacked up and some are even controlling what your allowed to use it for. I have even heard stories about some using so much bandwidth, that the company FORCES them to buy a business account with insanely higher prices becaus they went over there "Limit" which now with HD internet streaming is not too hard to exceed.

yea the USA is not where u want to go for internet, go to Japan dude, what we have here, they give away for free in cereal boxes.

The internet was orignally designed by MIT students who learned how to connect their computers over long distances for communication and hacking purposes to an LA school. The US military then began using this "Network" for their computers. Sweden was the first place it was used by civilians ;)

lol yes the "Internet" was Made In America like many other good things that we don't keep up with and become second rate like our cars and home electronics...
We're still number 1 in blowing people the F up ;). That stands for something right...right?

Actually, it may depend what you consider to be the "internet". Broadband was invented at CERN, that place on the French/Swiss border with what the press likes to call the "Doomsday Machine".
That Particle Accelerator which started it's action last fall. They invented broadband to transfer all their data faster some time ago.

yes but Broadband isnt the internet, the internet is the connection of many computers with the ability for each to independently transfer information to and from any other one. Broadband is just a connection type (All be it a very good connection type) but the internet existed before broadband.

First of all AOL is NOT the internet... Luckily that is dieing out... I think it still hangs on by some sort of "AOL for broadband" thread of life...

I had Dial up LONG after everybody I knew had Cable internet. It wasn't until I moved out and got my own place that I got Hi speed internet, and of course my parents then picked up DSL. My net was always pretty good at home though. Think I regularly got connections of 45kbs on our 56k so that's decent. I've seen some people (Like my boss) who don't break 30 with their dial up. DSL is so cheap now a day that there is no reason to waist money on dial up. Sure those companies out there can push their "high speed" dial up for cheaper than anybody else but if you break it down price per kbs you are paying a lot more. DSL gives you about 3 times the speed at 1/2 the cost per kb. All it boils down to now is that the internet is no longer compatible with Dial-up... Hell even the internet ready phones get better speeds then your old 56k
