I think it's more of an "ask and play" thing. You message somebody and say "Do you want to play some L4D" Or of course launch the game and use the invite friends feature.

Yea, just hop on whenever, get on vent if you want and get in the L4D channel, and open your invite list to the SS clan section ingame, or over Steam, and just invite whomever you want, or just join a random game. I suggest you play through each of the 4 maps fully at least once on Coop to get the story of each one, even if it is with just 3 other AI players though before you play Vs mode.
