View Full Version : CoD4 Clan Server Needs Help!

Well this is the thread I was hoping not to have to write.. :mellow:
Originally we had 6 people who had monthly subscription payments set up to cover our clans Call of Duty 4 server fees.
All but two of those people have dropped out in the last couple of months.
Even though we have been pretty busy on our Thursday night clan only games, this might show that the game is showing it's age early. We have noticed a drop in players since CoD WaW came out but there are still many players each night and this seems to be a favorite server for many people.
With all of the other annual costs of running the clans site I can't justify paying the rest of the CoD4 monthly fee by myself. The only other person paying right now is Zombie and he also covers the Ventrilo monthly fees by himself. I also don't plan to drop this server for a cheaper lower quality company.
So what we really need is either $48 extra in donations each month but that would be very unlikely.. Or we need to have 4 more people sign up to a monthly slot for $12 a month or $72 every 6 months.
If we don't manage to get any of that by Jan 21 then that will show the game has lost it's appeal so I will refund and member payments and shut it down. :(

If I could make a suggestion....
I know you guys are kind of partial to the hosting company that you've been using but it is quite expensive at $60-$70/month. At $12 a head you need 5 or 6 members willing to split the bill. I've used Gameservers.com in the past and they can do the same server for $36/month which means you would only need 3 donations per month to maintain it.
If you do go that route I recommend that you use their Chicago servers and avoid the New Jersey servers. The NJ connections are junk.
Cheers.

Well Dr.H and Hand like the "No Lag" and the good server. No one can Hack and all that. Thats why they have a expensive server. I think. LOL Hand well reply to this thread and give you the correct answer. :) Peace

Yea Surf, your right, it is more expensive, but it never lags and has the best anti-hack programs implemented. we have only been hacked a few times, and those were people hitting things in a way that no server could stop.
Also your right, it never lags

Ah the old cost vs quality question. I did a lot of research into game server companies before we settled on Nuclear Fallout as our game server host. You can find a middle ground on server but if you are looking for the best servers time and time again NFO be on the top of the list. Their software, hardware, and tech support are top notch. Any time I have a question or need something done, I'm talking to someone within 1-2 min and they will stay with you until the issue is resolved and contact you by email to make sure everything is ok.
I will cover any decent shortages in the server costs but it would be great to cover the NFO fee's each month without having to switch to a cheaper company. I think if we get to that point it will show that we no longer have enough clan interest in the server to keep it going so we'll probably just shut it down.
Some of the subscriptions have been reworked since last month so I would'nt be surprised to see more pop up in the next few weeks before to payment is due.

I was considering closing the server today due to difficulty in monthly payments and the fact I won't be able to cover the differences anymore.
I did some research though and instead chose to make some changes to the server.
1) The server is now a 21 person server with 1 dedicated slot so that at least 1 admin can always access the server for administration or making space for clan members. This way we have more room for players at a lower cost vs our 24 person which had 6 private slots that were never all filled at one time.
2) I moved it from DC to Atlanta to better distribute the ping to a wider range of our active members.
With the current sale that NFO is having this drops the monthly server price to $46 which is exactly our current donation amount each month after all subscriptions come in.
Yup that's giving us more open slots for $20 less each month and still staying on the NFO servers which are the best in the biz!
So as long as we keep up our current subscriptions then I think we're good for a while.

Even though I don't play COD4, I think you deserve a big thanks. Your research and efforts are saving the clan members money and allowing them better access to the game. Good job H!

Everyone wanted their own slots in the beginning which made sense then when we were all on every night. Also NFO just started a 20% temporary sale which makes a big difference but you have to adjust your account to have it apply to you. If you do nothing then you'd keep paying the full price without knowing you could get that sale price.

Tell me whats the "+" mean? I see it but i dont know what it is ......
||§§||Dr.H
04-14-2009, 02:06 PM
The "+" is just telling me now that that persons payment has been recieved. Now that there are enough subscribtions to cover the payments I may change the donation box some so it will be different than now.

OK some of you might notice the CoD4 server hasn't changed yet. Looks like I missed a step that wasn't even listed on their order form... Anyway, I'm working on it and hope to have it up and running for tonight but the other server still works if I don't.
I also get a free 10 person Vent server with the CoD4 server that I've never set up before but I'm thinking about setting it up as a dedicated WoW vent since our main Vent is mostly Shooter channels, this will give to wow people some more privacy.

I wish wow was free! if that was the case you would get 14.99 from me.
Sucks. I dont know how long I will play wow but its taking all my extra time right now. When we move and if the house is in need of my help I might stop for a little any ways. Time will tell.

You do what you have to do Reigh. WoW is really hard to give up played every day but when it comes down to it, it's still just a game and real life comes first.
I agree that I wish it was free too but look how crowded it is when it's a pay game.. imagine how many people would be playing it if it was free lol Blizzard couldn't afford to run that many servers.

Server upgrade is complete and running. You won't see it on the server yet since the gametracker database needs to be updated but it does work since Pugilist and me are in there now.
CoD4 DSN is the same for the new server( suicidesoldiers.nuclearfallout.net:28930), but ip is different: 64.94.238.63 port:28930

I was confused when my watcher no longer saw the server but I could still connect using my desktop shortcut, Xfire was at a loss.
I can see an IP address change hurting our dwindling server population though. I really hope our (non forum) server regulars are smart enough to figure it out... although that might be giving them to much credit :doh:
Tried playing a few minutes ago, got called a camper on cargoship two vs me. Mowed them down real quick before they promptly left.

Hmm I didn't think about that. I moved the server mainly to give our South Western guys a bit better ping.
A few of us we're in a couple hrs ago and there was around 6 or so non clan members. If they saved the server by name and not IP it should still work but otherwise they will have to search for us in the list again.
I don't know..hmm what do you guys think? The old server location had a much higher rank score and people who knew it while the new locations rank on gametracker has to start all over but a lot more people will get better pings. The new server is listed on the CoD4 in game server list, I checked. I wonder if we are going to loose more non clan visiters by doing this or gain more in the long run looking for better pings?
||§§||Hand_O_Death
05-24-2009, 06:35 PM
did you save any money or is it just changing server locations?
we will loos some regulars, but some will figure it out if they do not assume the server was just shut down all together. some will search for the name, i say we will have about 50% carry over of old non clan forum regulars with in 2 weeks. n well loos a good ranked server but either way if it makes it better for the west coasters then good, as long as it does not cripple us east coasters.
||§§||Dr.H
05-24-2009, 08:45 PM
We saved money whether we moved the server location or not. The move was just to spread out the ping rate a bit more so our other clan members could play with less lag.
The server moving from DC to Atlanta barely effects east coast pings at all while giving our Midwest guys a good 25-50 drop in ping rate.
We'll all talk about it on vent in the next night or so and come up with a good answer.
